Cistus Absolute – Spain – Cistus ladaniferus var. beta maculata
Cistus SEV absolute is more powerful than the normal Cistus absolute, its more ambery, honeyed and leathery, a little animalic with always this hot side characteristic of the cistus. It keeps the aromatic note of the artemisia which gives strength to the extract. It is an interesting contrast between the soft ambery side and the aromatic freshness.
The SEV absolute differs from other extracts of the cistus by its smoky and liquorish notes. It will enhance woody accords such as cedar or musky violets.
We have been working with essentials and absolutes from many years and among all perfumery materials Cistus is our favorite. It has an amazing character, i seen this is the coming together of multiple materials into one, its so incency, ambery, cookie dough, leathery, has slight nuances of spices, its just amazing. Its like a blend of benzoin, labdanum, frankincense and spices but no this is just one material straight produce of mother nature. The absolute is also used in combination with woody and ambery accords.
Cistus ladaniferus var. beta maculatus is the only species of cistus to be used in perfumery. Present all around the Mediterranean, cistus is particularly abundant in Andalusia where the arid climate is favourable to its development. It flowers from April to June in the form of large white flowers with ephemeral purple macules. At the end of flowering, between May and June, new branches appear. They will then produce a gum, called labdanum, whose intoxicating smell fills the air of the hills.
