How to Evaluate a Perfumery Raw Material Like a Professional

Why Proper Evaluation Matters

One of the most important skills in perfumery is also one of the most overlooked — the ability to properly evaluate a raw material before using it in a formula. Professional perfumers spend years training their noses and developing systematic approaches to understanding how an ingredient behaves on its own and within a composition.

This guide walks you through the professional approach to raw material evaluation, step by step.

It is tempting to smell a new material straight from the bottle and move quickly to blending. But a raw material smelled on a blotter will reveal layers and behaviours that you simply cannot detect from the cap of a bottle. And a material that smells appealing in isolation may behave very differently when combined with other ingredients or when applied to skin.

Professional evaluators take time with each material. They smell it repeatedly at different stages. They note how it changes. They assess its strength, its character, and its potential within a composition.

What You Will Need

  • Perfumery blotter strips (also called mouillettes)
  • A pencil or marker to label each blotter
  • A notebook for recording observations
  • The raw material to be evaluated (diluted to 10% in ethanol for most aroma chemicals; essential oils and absolutes can be evaluated neat or diluted)
  • Clean air — avoid evaluating in a room with strong competing smells

Step 1 — Prepare Your Sample

For essential oils and absolutes, you can apply a small amount to a blotter strip directly. For concentrated aroma chemicals, it is best practice to dilute to 10% in perfumers' ethanol first — many powerful synthetic molecules are overwhelming at full concentration and reveal their true character far better when diluted.

Label your blotter clearly with the material name and the date. This is important if you are evaluating multiple materials simultaneously, and essential if you want to compare evaluations over time.

Step 2 — The First Impression

Hold the blotter approximately five to ten centimetres from your nose and inhale gently. Do not thrust the blotter directly under your nostrils — this overwhelms the olfactory system and gives you less information, not more.

Note your immediate impression. Ask yourself:

  • What family does this smell like? (Floral, woody, citrus, spicy, animalic, green, aquatic, resinous, musky?)
  • Is it pleasant, challenging, or neutral?
  • Is it familiar, or does it remind you of something specific?
  • Is the intensity soft, moderate, or powerful?

Write down your first impression in your notebook before it fades. First impressions matter and are worth capturing, even if your understanding of the material deepens later.

Step 3 — The Development (5–20 Minutes)

Set the blotter down and return to it after five minutes. Smell it again. Note what has changed. Many materials reveal hidden facets as the most volatile components begin to evaporate.

Return again at ten minutes and twenty minutes. Some materials — particularly rich resins, musks, and base note ingredients like oud — barely change at this stage. Others transform dramatically. A material that smelled harsh or sharp at first may become smooth and beautiful as it develops.

Ask yourself at each stage:

  • What has changed?
  • Are there new nuances emerging?
  • Is the character becoming more or less appealing?
  • Which notes are coming forward and which are receding?

Step 4 — The Dry-Down (1–4 Hours)

Return to the blotter at the one-hour and four-hour marks. This is the dry-down phase — the stage that reveals the true character of the material at its most settled and stable.

For base note materials such as oud, sandalwood, vetiver, labdanum, and musks, the dry-down is often the most revealing and beautiful stage. What appeared heavy or sharp in the opening may become soft, round, and deeply appealing hours later.

Note the following:

  • How much of the original character remains?
  • Has the material become more or less complex?
  • How well does it project at this stage — is it still noticeable, or has it faded entirely?
  • Would this dry-down character work well as a foundation for a fragrance?

Step 5 — Tenacity Assessment

Tenacity refers to how long a material remains perceptible on a blotter or on skin. It is one of the most important practical qualities of a raw material — particularly for base notes, which are expected to anchor and extend a fragrance's longevity.

As a rough guide:

  • High tenacity: Still clearly perceptible after 24 hours (musks, oud, labdanum, benzyl benzoate)
  • Medium tenacity: Perceptible for 4–8 hours (sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, rose absolute)
  • Low tenacity: Fades within 1–2 hours (most citrus oils, light herbs, some aldehydes)

Understanding the tenacity of your ingredients helps you build formulas that last.

Step 6 — On-Skin Evaluation

Once you have evaluated the material on a blotter, apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist and repeat the observation process. Skin chemistry varies between individuals and interacts with fragrance materials in ways that a blotter cannot fully replicate.

Note whether the material smells different on skin compared to the blotter. Many florals bloom beautifully on warm skin. Some animalic materials become more pronounced. Others — particularly certain synthetic musks — are almost imperceptible on a blotter but reveal themselves fully when warmed by the skin.

Step 7 — Blending Potential

The final stage of evaluation is to consider how the material might work within a composition. Ask yourself:

  • Is this a top, heart, or base note material?
  • What other materials might it complement?
  • Would it work best as a key ingredient or as a supporting note?
  • Does it remind you of any accords or finished fragrances you admire?

Over time, as you evaluate more materials and begin blending, you will develop an instinctive sense for how ingredients interact. This is the heart of the perfumer's craft.

Keeping a Raw Material Library

Professional perfumers maintain detailed notebooks or digital records of every material they have evaluated. A good raw material record should include the material name, supplier, batch number, date of evaluation, impressions at each stage, and any blending ideas that came to mind.
