As a perfumer is see the use of this in Oudy, woody, leathery, smokey compositions. You will absolutely love the results.
Juniper Tar is smokey phenolic with nuances of oud extracted at high heat, intense, spicy, burnt henna, tobacco, leathery and woody all the way.
The scent profile of juniper tar is unmistakably bold and rugged, characterized by its deep, smoky aroma reminiscent of burning wood or campfire embers. This primary note evokes images of dense forests and rugged landscapes, embodying the essence of wilderness and primal earthiness. Upon closer olfactory inspection, nuances of leather and tobacco emerge, adding layers of complexity and intrigue to the fragrance. These secondary notes lend a robust and masculine character to juniper tar, making it a distinctive choice in perfumery and personal care formulations.
Despite its intense smokiness, juniper tar also carries a subtle sweetness akin to caramel or honey, which softens the overall composition and balances its rugged profile. This interplay of smoky, leathery, and sweet undertones creates a harmonious aroma that is both evocative and enduring.
The extraction process of Juniper Tar begins with the careful selection and harvesting of juniper twigs, leaves and wood, preferably from mature trees that have developed a high concentration of aromatic resins. The wood is then dried and chipped or shredded to facilitate the extraction process.
We have made modification to the extraction technique, however in simple terms, the wood chips are heated in the absence of oxygen within a specialized vessel called a retort. As the wood undergoes thermal decomposition, volatile compounds—including the aromatic oils—are released and captured.
Juniper tar, or cade oil, extracted from the wood of Juniperus oxycedrus, stands as a testament to nature’s potency and resilience. Its distinctive smoky aroma, coupled with hints of leather and sweetness, makes it a sought-after ingredient in perfumery.
